Veterinary medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of animals (especially domestic animals). Practitioners of veterinary medicine are known as veterinarians. In most developed countries, veterinarians are highly qualified professionals with advanced educations.
Veterinary medicine has become a very booming career opportunity in this modern century. According to the BLS National Employment Matrix, employment in veterinary medicine is projected to increase much faster than average at a rate of 33 percent till 2018. Excellent job opportunities are expected. Though, the relationship between the man and animal is quite old but with the passage of time, it has a lot strengthened. Veterinary medicine is one such occupation that primarily focuses at the well being of the animals- both wild and domestic. Veterinary medicine basically focuses on knowing and then getting yourself educated and trained to cure the animals of their different diseases, illnesses and injuries.According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), specialities related to veterinary medicine including emergency medicine, lab animal medicine, poultry medicine, preventative medicine, reproductive medicine and zoological medicine. The AVMA also recognizes veterinary medicine in specialty organizations (RVSO) that may be or may be not include the previously listed specialties. The RVSO involving veterinary medicine include the American Collegae of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM); the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM), including cardiology, small animal internal medicine, large animal internal medicine, neurology and oncology; the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM), including epidemiology; and the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM).
There are numerous well reputed institutes that offer veterinary medicine specialization. There are certain prerequisites to enter in such an institute. There are many veterinary schools as well where different types of courses and specializations are being offered in the field of animal physiology and the related subjects. Obviously, in order to become a specialized animal physician, you are supposed to gain the degree in this very subject along with the required training sessions.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) May 2008 Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) Survey Program, the national average salary for veterinarians was $89,450. The national median salary ranged from below $46,610 to above $143,660. According to the BLS, the average annual salary for person in veterinary medicine who work in the federal government was $93,398 in March 2009.
